AKG C518 Repair:
We had two AKG C518 plus XLR adapter cables in for repair.
One adapter cable was simply missing the locking screw and both needed a clean.
One AKG C518 had a badly soldered hot wire on the capsule which was touching the screen hence rendering it dead.
The other C518 had a fully broken hot wire on the capsule but after resoldering this it became clear that there was another issue of significant crackling when it was moved.
This fault was finally tracked down to a completely broken cable screen at the junction of the flexible rubber neck. A very intricate repair to the cable was in order as most of the parts are glued together making this microphone almost impossible to dismantle without significant damage.
The cable which runs from the capsule to the XLR is so thin and weak it almost seemed not up to the job and any impact of a drum stick on the microphone head is highly likely to cause the hot cable to fracture off.
