Roland SPD SX repair:

  • It wont power on.

Opening up a Roland SPD SX:

Do so with great care as these units are really awkward.

After removing all the screws from the underside of the shell the front edge will lift a little. However, proceed with caution from here on.

REMOVE the gain knob cover from the rear panel will give a little more leeway.

The rear jack board tends to catch against the shell. There may be a specific way that we are not aware of but after opening three of these units its always been the same so far:

  • Gently wiggle the top case left and right whilst pulling up at the front just a little.
  • The top rear of the case needs to very slightly ‘pop’ up and forward to clear the jack board from the rear plastic chassis.
  • Once it is free lift the front up very carefully as there is a short flexible flat ribbon cable that prevents full access and needs to be removed carefully first.
  • Once that is free the other two FF cables can be disconnected and the top and bottom sections can be separated.

Closing up a Roland SPD SX

For some reason this is the opposite and has always seemed far easier. Slide the top case section down and back, at a slight angle, just be careful not to damage the jack connectors as they enter the holes in the rear chassis. It should pop into place with a little jiggling. After that its push the knob cover back on and replace all the screws.

Considering this unit is designed to be hit with drum sticks, it seems rather odd that a number of the internal connectors are weak, fragile and rather wobbly.
